He notices the things no one else sees in the dark
The tunnel sloped downward, cool and dark. Finn’s claws clicked on wet stone. He had never gone this far before. Then he smelled it—something sweet, like rain on warm earth. The air hummed, just a little.
Finn paused. His skin prickled. The tunnel opened into a cave, and the cave was full of light. Not firelight. Not sunlight. The walls glowed green and blue, soft as moonlight on water. And in the center of the cave, on a flat rock, sat three creatures. They were watching him.
The first was a toad with golden eyes. The second, a newt with a tail like a ribbon. The third, an old frog with a voice like a slow river. "We’ve been waiting for you," the frog said. Finn’s throat tightened. "For me?" The toad leaned forward. "For someone who listens."
