Long ago, before feathers knew how to dance in the wind... Whistle the sparrow hopped along the riverbank. His wings were strong, but his heart felt heavy. Alone on the branch, he missed his brother who had flown south last week. Then he saw it—a single feather, lying in the mud. It was soft and golden, just like his brother’s. Whistle picked it up. "Fly," he whispered. It just sat in his beak like a tiny stone. He tossed it into the air. It just sat in his beak like a tiny stone. He flapped his wings hard. The feather wobbled, then plopped into the water. Whistle sighed. The river carried it away. A ladybug crawled onto his foot. She didn’t ask why he was sad. She didn’t try to fix it. She just stayed. Whistle watched the water ripple. The feather was gone. But the ladybug was still there. Whistle tucked his beak under his wing. The ladybug crawled onto his back. It just sat in his beak like a tiny stone. And that was enough. The wind hummed. The river kept moving. Whistle closed his eyes.
