Long ago, before shadows had names... Stripe was a little skunk with a white stripe down her back. Every night, she curled in her den. The den was cozy. But one corner was dark. Something wiggled there. Stripe’s heart went thump-thump. Her paws felt cold. She squeezed her eyes shut. Something wiggled there. Shhh... listen... A tiny sound. Like leaves tapping. Stripe peeked. The dark corner had two bright eyes. A little mouse sat there. His tail twitched. Something wiggled there. But now it was just him. He was scared too. The den was too big for one. Stripe scooted close. The mouse sniffed. They curled together. The corner wasn’t dark anymore. It was just a corner. With a friend inside. Stripe’s heart went slow. Her paws felt warm. The wiggle was gone. Only soft breathing. Only sleep. And ever since then, shadows wiggle less when you listen.
