Solren stepped onto the silver bridge that arched over the Vault of Hush. Below, the air shimmered like water, holding the shapes of sleeping sounds: a mother’s lullaby, the creak of a rocking chair, the hush of snowfall. His boots made no sound on the bridge, as if the world itself was holding its breath.
