There was a seahorse, and Pearl had one tiny problem. Every night, when the sun dipped low, Pearl would curl her tail tight. The tidepool looked different in the dark. The rocks cast long shadows. The water made soft, slippery sounds. Something might be hiding there. Pearl’s heart beat fast like little bubbles popping. The tidepool hums when it’s scared too. She whispered to herself. But she didn’t move. Then——a sound. Not the scary kind. A tiny plink. Like a pebble dropping into water. Pearl peeked. There, in the dark corner, was a hermit crab tapping his shell against a stone. The tidepool hums when it’s scared too. The crab didn’t see her. He just kept tapping. Plink. Plink. Pearl’s heart slowed. The water felt warmer. She swam closer. The crab stopped. He waved a tiny claw. Pearl curled her tail around a smooth rock. The tidepool wasn’t scary anymore. It was just the tidepool, humming its quiet song. The tidepool hums when it’s scared too.
