One day, Chai said to the kettle— "Why does your steam always rise, then vanish?" The kettle only hissed, so Chai watched the steam curl upward. The steam knew the way. It drifted past the window, over the sill, into the cool night. Shhh... listen... can you hear the night humming? Chai tipped herself over—just a little—and rolled off the table. The steam waited, swirling like a question mark. The steam knew the way. She followed it past the sleeping cat, over the garden fence. The grass tickled her side. Fireflies blinked like tiny lanterns, and the wind hummed a tune without words. Between you and me... the wind was lonely too. It whispered, "Where are you going, little cup?" Chai said, "I’m following the steam. It knows the way." The wind laughed. "The steam knows many ways. But do you know where you’re going?" Chai didn’t. So the wind showed her—a patch of clover where the moon pooled like spilled milk. The steam settled there, soft as a sigh. The steam knew the way. And there, in the quiet, Chai heard it too. A whisper so soft it might have been the earth breathing. The wind leaned close and said, "Now you know." The clover folded its leaves. The fireflies dimmed. The steam curled into the dark, and Chai rested in the moon’s glow. Her sides rose and fell with the wind’s breath. The night hummed. The clover slept. The steam was gone. And Chai found her answer.
