One day, Bloom said to the sparrow perched on his lowest branch— Shhh... listen... Can you hear it? The air is changing. The frost is coming on tiptoe. The sparrow tilted her head. Tiptoe? Frost doesn’t walk. Bloom rustled his leaves, just once. It does when it’s new. It brushes the grass like a cat’s paw, soft as breath. The sparrow hopped closer. But I’m lost. My flock flew south yesterday. I don’t know how to find them. Bloom felt the cold creeping up his roots. Between you and me, I don’t know either. The frost is coming on tiptoe. It will cover the path soon. The sparrow shivered. What do we do? Bloom stretched one branch toward the horizon. We wait. We listen. The frost whispers when it’s near. The night grew quieter. The stars leaned in. Then— A sound like sugar cracking. The frost is coming on tiptoe. The sparrow tucked her beak under her wing. Bloom closed his leaves, one by one, like a book settling shut. The frost painted the world silver. The path disappeared. And the sparrow slept safe in the crook of Bloom’s arm. Morning came soft. The frost melted into dew. The sparrow stretched her wings and found her flock waiting in the sky. Bloom swayed in the wind. His leaves were still closed. But his roots hummed. And Bloom found his answer.
